Do you want to specialise, or just do GP?

First of all, I need to clarify something. A General Practicioner is a specialist. They undergo specialist training just like any other specialist. This has been the case for over 10 years now. Someone who doesn't specialise becomes a Career Medical Officer. They only work in the hospital, and cannot work in private practice. I am hoping to one day specialise.

The briefest and most honest answer I can give you right now is: I don't know. In the back of my mind, however I am considering choosing one or more of the following specialities (in order of preference):
  1. Rural and Remote Medicine
  2. Emergency Medicine
  3. Something else (as a physician)
  4. General Practice
I am also thinking of doing basic training in one or more of the following areas:
  • Obstetrics
  • Anaesthetics
  • Anatomy
  • Emergency Surgery
However, I reserve the right to change my mind on any one of these at any stage! (Who knows, I might even choose to do surgery!)

I hope that clears things up for you! (because it didn't for me)
